Chapter Nineteen

John and Cal stood rooted to the spot, helpless and horror stricken as Summer continued to retch violently. Cal came to his senses first, yelling loudly for Hannah, who came running in, fear showing on her round little face.

Hannah saw her little lamb bent over the chamber pot and drew in her breath sharply. She sent the men from the room with a scalding tongue. "I don't want to see either of your faces in this room again tonight. The poor child is in need of rest, now scat."

Hannah helped Summer back to bed, and cleaned her face with a cool cloth. "There, there, Lamby, Hannah is here. She's going to take good care of you."

Summer sank back in the bed, grateful for Hannah's presence and was soon asleep, reassured that Hannah was there to watch over her. In the morning she felt better, except for a slight nausea when she saw Hannah with a tray of food. "Hannah, how is Nenepownam? I'm sorry I added to your burden last night. I don't know what came over me. Must have been the venison I ate at the Indian camp."

"'Tis my fault, Lamby. I should have known better than to let Cal take a delicate creature like you on such a long trip into the wilderness. What was I thinking of? You could have been scalped by bloodthirsty savages."

Summer smiled to herself. She had never considered herself a delicate creature.

"As for Cal's mother. She's improved in great measure. Her forehead is cool this morning. 'Tis certain your medicine be working good. Elizabeth's poultices too. Drawing the badness right out of her foot, it is. Elizabeth stayed the night. Slept on a pallet in Nenepownam's room. Right fond of that Indian she is. But then, the two of them are so much alike - wild things."

"Where's John? Did he stay the night too?"

"No, I sent him back to his own home with Alisha. I had my hands full enough. Didn't need another underfoot. Went willing enough, too. Never saw a man look so helpless in my life as when he saw how ill you be. I don't know what we're going to do with that man. Believe you me, I don't want to be the one who tells him about you and Cal."

Summer's stomach lurched at the mention of telling John. "Hannah, take the food away. I can't eat."

Hannah looked at her closely. "You look a mite peaked, child. Are you sure it's just bad food making you feel bad?"

"Of course, I'm sure. Just leave the mead for me. I'll be fine. Stop worrying."

Once the nausea passed, Summer got dressed and went to Cal's room to check on Nenepownam. The Indian woman was sitting in bed working on a deerskin dress. Summer brushed her fingers over the leather, luxuriating in the soft, velvety feel of it. "You must truly feel like a princess wearing such a dress."

Nenepownam smiled warmly. "And you, will you feel like a princess when you wear it? It is my marriage gift to you.
